Rooks
County Health Department and Home Health Agency Services
Childhood and Adult Immunizations
All children need protection against Polio, Diphtheria,
Tetanus, Pertussis, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella and
Hepatitis B. Some diseases may require a series of
vaccinations, while others may require only one. Ask about
our Vaccines for Children program to qualify for
reduced price vaccinations.
Chickenpox and Hepatitis A vaccines are also available.
Vaccines for Tetanus and Hepatitis B and A, and seasonal Flu
and Pneumonia are available for adults. Also, Tuberculin
skin tests are available.
Outreach clinics are held the lst Wednesday of each month
at the Plainville Senior Center Mealsite, and the 2nd
Wednesday of each month at the Palco Senior Center Mealsite.
Women's Health and Contraceptives
Each month, a pap clinic is held at the Health Dept. by
appointment only. Contraceptives are available for those who
have had an annual pap and breast exam. Contraceptive
supplies and Depo Provera shots are picked up/administered
on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
Pregnancy tests and testing for STDs (sexually
transmitted diseases) and counseling/referrals are also
available. All services are confidential regardless of age,
and a sliding fee scale is applied so that charges are based
on ability to pay.
Blood Drawing Services
Cholesterol, Tryglicerides, and Glucose (blood sugar)
screening can be done by our registered nurses without a
doctor's order. Fasting is required for at least 8 hours
before the blood is drawn. Results are usually available the
following day.
All other blood draws must have a doctor order. A $5
charge applies to all draws done in the office and billed to
Medicare or other insurance. This charge can be billed to
most insurance plans. Non-insured clients obtaining a draw
at special public health rates must pay for services at the
time of the draw.
Free Blood Pressure Clinics
Blood pressure checks are available at the Health Dept.
daily. This is done as early intervention screening and
clients are referred to their physicians if readings are not
within the normal range. Outreach clinics are available each
month on the 1st Wednesday at the Plainville Senior Center,
the 2nd Wednesday at the Palco Senior Center, and the 3rd
Thursday at the Stockton Senior Center.
Child Health Assessments
Physicals that are required for day care and privately
operated preschools can be performed by our
assessment-certified registered nurses. Also, a
pre-admission physical is required for any child under 9
years of age who is entering the Kansas school system for
the first time. The cost of a school exam can be deferred if
the child qualifies for free or reduced price lunches at
school.
Kan Be Healthy screenings for Medicaid and Healthwave
recipients are also performed by our registered nurses.
Those enrolled in Health Connect may need a referral from
their primary physicians for the screenings.
Vision and Hearing Tests
Vision testing is performed with the HOTV and Snellan
wall chart and the Titmus machine for determining near or
far sightedness. Color blindness and muscle balance can also
be tested.
Two hearing tests are available: a tympanogram, which
checks middle ear pressure, and audiogram, which is a
decimal tone test.
Child Care Licensing and Information
Our childcare licensing worker provides information
packets and assistance to registered and licensed childcare
providers. For those who need child care, a list of the
county's childcare providers in good standing is available
on request.
Miscellaneous Injections
Nurses will give injections of a client's prescribed
medication with a physician's order. These include special
travel vaccines, B-12, and hormone injections. Allergy shots
will not be given due to potential adverse reactions.
WIC: Women, Infants & Children
WIC is a USDA sponsored food supplement program for
pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 5 years
old. Qualifications are certain income guidelines and a
recognized need for better nutrition

clients of all ages by physician order. Non-ordered visits
can be done for limited services at the request of the
client or family for a small fee. Home Health Aide visits
can be ordered to assist with personal care, ambulation,
exercise and household services essential to health care at
home.
