City of Woodston selected for water project

The City of Woodston's water project has been selected for USDA Rural Development American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funding.  Recover Act funds will help the rural economy and create jobs.  USDA Rural Development State Director Patty Clark congratulated the City of Woodston as one of eight Kansas recipients of the ARRA funds.

The City of Woodston will receive a loan of $342,000 and a grant of $484,000 to construct a new Ion Exchange Nitrate Removal water treatment facility, re-drill one well, refurbish a second well, paint the water tower, upgrade the telemetry system, installation of an emergency standby generator, and install automatic read meters.  Agency funds will be complemented by a Community Development Block Grant of $344,000 from the Kansas Department of Commerce.   Funding of individual recipients is contingent upon their meeting the terms of the loan or grant agreements, and the letter of condition.

The City's existing water distribution system was refurbished with new water mains in 1995.   The proposed improvements will provide the City with a sufficient quantity of water to meet their current and future needs, provide two water supply sources, lower the nitrate level of the water supply below the Maximum Contaminant Level to comply with state regulations, provide an emergency source of power to operate the west water well and the proposed ion exchange water treatment plant.

The system serves approximately 116 residents in town and sells water to Rooks County Water District #1.
